Home Is Where The Heart Is

As a young girl, I would often yearn for a 'white picket fence' family dynamic. Obviously, there is no such thing as a perfect family, but I wanted the dynamic that came with a ‘white picket fence’ (happy parents and children). My parents had recently divorced and I was just another child growing up in a broken home. According to the American Psychological Association, “40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States divorce.”

Thankfully, my extended family was always so supportive and helped me get through those difficult years. It is so sobering to look back on that season of my life and see how God was shaping me and instilling a deep want inside of me for a family of my own one day, even though I didn’t know it yet. All my passion for all things home and family comes from the pain and struggles I experienced as a young girl who grew up in a broken home. It reminds me of the saying, “God can turn your test into a testimony and your trial into a triumph.”

Before I met my husband, I had no intentions or thoughts of ‘settling down’. I wasn’t opposed to it, but I didn’t really give it much thought either. God truly surprised me when he blessed me with my amazing husband. When we got married I decided I was going to try my best everyday to truly serve my family and make my home a place of refuge from the craziness in the world. When I was dealing with my parents split, home wasn’t a place I associated happiness with. I wanted to be away from home as much as possible and distract myself. God has shown me that a happy home is something you work for everyday and create for your own family. It takes dedication and a firm foundation built on God to make a home and haven. Home is such a special and sacred place to me now and God truly heard my heart cries as a young child and gave me something I always wanted.

Harold B. Lee once said, “The most important work you will ever do will be within the walls of your own home.” God created the family unit (man, woman, children) in Genesis and family is of the utmost importance. A loving home environment that is founded on Christ makes a huge impact on the community and world. With broken homes being the norm and the divorce rate at an all time high, fighting for the family is crucial. God has unspeakable blessings for families who hold fast to HIM. There will never be a perfect family, but with God a family can thrive and be an incredible witness to the lost and dying in the world. A home is where a family shares their deepest desires and dreams and where an unstoppable team can be built with an unshakeable bond. Hold fast to your family and hold on even tighter to God through the good and bad. A family is one of God’s greatest blessings that He gives us this side of heaven.

I am praying God will bless and use your family to be a great light to those in your community!
