Putting yourself out there is so hard. It is awkward. It is downright nerve-wracking to be completely transparent with people. When God has placed something so strongly on your heart. A passion or a goal or a dream He wants you to follow... it becomes worth the discomfort. He never calls us to comfort. Oftentimes, His disciples found themselves in the midst of extremely uncomfortable situations. I like comfort. I like normalcy. But I know that God doesn't want any of us hiding out in the shadows. I was reminded this morning of the woman in the Bible who had a debilitating illness who was hiding in the shadows.
Luke 8:43-48 says, "And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace."
This women knew what hiding in the shadows was like. She had a serious illness that I bet she was embarrassed about. Not much has changed in our society today... there are still so many stigmas surrounding illnesses. She was afraid of what people would think about her or maybe she was worried they would think she was dangerous to be around. The Bible says that there is "Nothing new under the sun." There are people who are hiding in the shadows today. First and foremost, there are people hiding in the shadows who are suffering, struggling, searching, and soul sick. Friend, if you're hiding in the shadows and feel like you can't be redeemed or think that your situation will never change; step out into the light. More specifically, step out and grab the hem of Jesus's garment. This lady had a moment where she was tired of the life she was living. She stepped out and took a radical step of faith to grab the hem of Christ's garment. She didn't think about her comfort or how this could potentially embarrass her deeply. She stepped out of the shadows and into the precious arms of Christ. I pray that if you haven't placed your faith in Christ Jesus that you will today. Today's verse of the day on the Bible app is 2 Peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
Even after we become Christian's we still tend to hid out in the shadows. Fear keeps up there fretting over the "what if's". We don't realize how important our God-given talents are and we let them go unused. I want to encourage you and maybe even give you a little push out of the shadows. God may be calling you to do something you know you need to do or maybe He wants you to step out in faith and follow that dream He gave you.
For me it looks like this blog. This seemingly crazy dream to build an encouraging community of women who want to be who God created them to be. To use my writing to encourage and to reach people who may be hiding out in the shadows.
I don't want to hide in the shadows. I want to be a light for Christ even when it is really awkward and uncomfortable. I don't want to hide my gifts and passions and dreams for fear of what others will think about them.
What does stepping out of the shadows look like you? The world needs your light and talents, friend! God made each of us unique. That means He wants to use you for His glory. Don't let fear keep you hidden in the shadows! Don't be afraid to step out and pursue that dream, follow the calling God has placed in your heart, or decide that your family is going to go against the grain and live a radical lifestyle. Who says you have to work an 8 to 5 job all your life? Who said that you can't afford to travel? You did... somewhere along the way you have told yourself that you can't do something. Stop hiding in the shadows and making excuses, friend. Hear my heart... you were made to live your life the way God wants you too! Whatever is keeping you in the shadows, don't let it hold you back anymore. You will thank yourself one day for not staying hid.
